All around the state, there are many loyal volunteers who spend time visiting patients… just some come with fur and a wagging tail. Meet some of our Northern Michigan pet visit volunteers!
Meet Luke
With his handler, LaRae, Luke “The Welcome Wagon” Rutenbar knows his purpose when he enters a facility! Greeting staff and residents alike, Luke spreads joy wherever he goes.
Meet Bodie
With his handler, Bill, Bodie is a certified therapy dog with Hospice of Michigan but also volunteers with first responders. He’s fluffin’ amazing!
Meet Cassie
With handler, Yvonne, Cassie is cute as a button, soft as a cloud, and captures the hearts of everyone she visits.
Meet Sammie
With handler, Karen, Sammie Cermak is loved by all and sure excels at spreading smiles everywhere he goes. He loves being pet by patients, and a treat every once in awhile is good for the soul, too.
About the Pet Visit Program
The Pet Visit program is just one of the many complimentary services offered at Hospice of Michigan. Thanks to amazing pet volunteers and handlers who go through thorough interviews and training, patients can experience the joyful companionship of dogs, cats and other friendly animals.
This type of non-medical treatment can have an incredible effect on patients and loved ones at the end-of-life such as lowering blood pressure, reducing anxiety, and stabilizing intense emotions.
