Finding Comfort in Grief: Don’s Journey

For Don, losing his beloved wife Marilyn of 47 years left a quiet space in his life that nothing else could fill. But with the help of Hospice of Michigan’s Grief Support Program, Don realized that grief, though it weighs heavily, becomes lighter when shared with others.

When asked about Marilyn, Don describes her as the most “intelligent, kind, talented, and generous” person he’s ever known. She was a gifted musician who played the organ for her church and was always looking for ways to serve others. At one point, she was helping seven children around the world receive education through World Mission. She was known for her giving spirit—a legacy Don honors to this day. Recently, he donated Marilyn’s clothing to those who need it, just as she would have done.

After Marilyn peacefully passed away on Hospice of Michigan’s care just over a year ago, Don began meeting with Ryan, a Grief Support Counselor at Hospice of Michigan. Over the past 13 months, they shared meaningful conversations about how to navigate grief and continue moving forward.

“It’s lonely at times, but having someone to talk to means the world,” Don said. “You start to think that there’s no one there, but there is. Hospice of Michigan helped me realize that.” Hospice of Michigan’s Grief Support Program provides guidance and resources for caregivers and family members free of charge for 13 months after death to ensure no one walks through their grief journey alone.

Even though Don feels grief, he lovingly remembers the wonderful memories they made in their years together and the beautiful family they created. His voice lights up with warmth when he shares stories about their road trips to Florida and their flea market pit-stops that always resulted in Marilyn filling their car with unique, one-of-a-kind treasures.

With every memory shared, Don shows that healing doesn’t mean forgetting—it means finding ways to keep Marilyn’s legacy alive. And thanks to Hospice of Michigan’s grief support, he has the strength to move forward each day, carrying her legacy on.

And his advice for others considering the Grief Journey Program?

“Just do it—talk to someone or join a group. There are people who want to walk alongside you.”
