Hospice of Michigan is seeking pet volunteers to help bring comfort and companionship to hospice patients and their families across Southeast Michigan. Ruth Moore-Lilly, volunteer program manager with Hospice of Michigan, joined Local 4 along with Hercules the dog and his handler, Ellen, to share more about how to get involved.
During the segment, handler Ellen shared what it’s like to bring her dog Hercules into hospice settings. He’s calm, comfortable being touched by strangers, and content to simply lie beside a patient’s bed or chair, whether or not they interact with him. Volunteer program manager Ruth Moore-Lilly noted that pet volunteers need to be at least a year old, up-to date-on vaccinations, and have an easygoing, people-friendly temperament like Hercules. Handlers must be 18 or older.
