A Promise Kept: Sherry and Cody’s Journey

At 83, Sherry was a vibrant and energetic woman with a hearty laugh and a zest for life. She deeply loved her family and her dog, Cody. While her spirit remained strong, her body and heart were failing.

When the topic of hospice came up, she was far more interested in sharing stories from her days as a hospice volunteer than in receiving services. Selflessly, she cared most about taking care of Cody, her beloved 15-year-old dog. She made it clear: she would fight to stay alive as long as he was by her side.

Though she continued to downplay her need for end-of-life care, she welcomed occasional calls and visits. However, she did not want to discuss hospice. She couldn’t imagine a future without Cody.

Knowing she needed more support, Hospice of Michigan’s care team explored every option to get her the care she needed to be comfortable, including NorthStar Palliative Care, the dedicated palliative program for those living with serious illness. But it was becoming clear that her body was running out of steam despite her spirit’s best efforts to keep going.

Her biggest priority – and Hospice of Michigan’s biggest priority – was to be at home so she could be with Cody. After coordinating and creating a personalized care plan that would meet Sherry’s needs and desires, she agreed to come home on hospice care.

Right away, the medical care and complementary services she received from Hospice of Michigan were essential in helping her live each day to the fullest. She was grateful to be in the familiarity and comfort of her home, surrounded by such caring staff, devoted family, and her beloved Cody.

As her health rapidly declined, she had one last wish: to find a new home for Cody. Her care team was determined to honor her wish and stay true to their mission of caring for Every Person, Every Time – even if that meant a pet.

Sherry passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and with Cody at her side. Soon after, Cody was lovingly adopted by Stacy and her family. Their own dog had died recently, and her son was struggling with the loss. He didn’t just lose a companion, but also the sense of purpose that came with caring for him. Cody was their answer.

Thanks to the kindness of the Hospice of Michigan community, Sherry and Cody were both surrounded by love and support when it was needed most. Each day was filled with love, dignity, and friendship that lasted a lifetime.
