The patient and family services volunteer provides practical, psychosocial and spiritual support to the hospice patient/family under the direction of the volunteer services manager and in accordance with the interdisciplinary plan of care.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Serves as companion for patient
  • Provides relief for care givers
  • May provide for physical care (hygiene, ambulation, comfort, etc.)
  • May provide housekeeping and meal preparation
  • May do shopping and errands
  • Maintains confidentiality
  • Provides required documentation
  • Attends educational/support meetings whenever possible
  • Contributes to an environment in which professional caregivers can work cooperatively
  • Facilitates community awareness and support of HOM

Qualifications:

  • Meets all licensing & certification requirements indicated by scope of service provided
  • Must meet minimum age requirements for a junior volunteer
  • Demonstrates good interpersonal communication skills
  • Successful completion of patient services volunteer training
  • Demonstrates healthy adjustment to loss
  • Demonstrates the ability to accept people as they are
  • Demonstrates appropriate patient care skills such as turning, lifting, etc.
