Tammy Waldo
Registered Nurse, Big Rapids

Death and dying are two words that Tammy Waldo is all too familiar with. She lost her husband at age thirty five from a bee sting allergy, her father and both in laws have passed on as well.

When the doctor she was working for closed his practice, Tammy applied everywhere except hospitals. Being a single mother with two sons at home, her first commitment was family and her job second. “I prayed to God that He would show me the job He wanted me to do.” That’s when she got the call from Hospice of Michigan. The sense of feeling needed and wanted made it an easy choice to work for Hospice. “It gives me a sense of purpose being able to help other people. It makes me feel valuable.”

Being a nurse of any kind is not easy, “especially when you know you are not able to make a patient well, that they won’t be getting better.” Dealing with a dying person every day involves an exceptional character, one that represents great caring, patience, and drive. “It takes someone who is willing to go the extra mile. Someone who is willing to be a patient advocate. A compassionate person who will go above and beyond once in awhile.”
