The Maggie Allesee Center for Quality of Life at the Hospice of Michigan corporate headquarters was started with a generous $3 million endowment from Detroit-area philanthropist and civic leader Maggie Allesee. The Center is the hub for research, education and community outreach initiatives aimed at improving care for people who are seriously ill and their caregivers at the local, state and national level. The Center also studies quality-of-life issues faced by older people, identifies ways they can live fully and educates them on how to plan for their own end-of-life care.

The Center has engaged in various research initiatives in collaboration with major universities and health care centers. These research projects have received funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, the National Telecommunication and Information Administration, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and other organizations.

The Center also conducts a variety of educational and outreach activities, many of which are accessible to the general public, providing a comfortable environment for individuals to discuss death at any point in their life. Activities also encourage participants to live life to the fullest and not wait until the end of life to resolve unfinished business.

The Center is a place where end-of-life experts can exchange ideas on enhancing the care of the dying and where health care providers can learn new ways to improve the care they provide their patients in the last phase of life.
